While we all know that sleep is crucial to our health, many still find themselves lying awake at night. If you’re one of these individuals, your mattress might be the problem. Though we tend to be a bit hesitant when it comes to purchasing a new bed, it’s important to understand the signs you need a new mattress.
When the time comes for a new mattress, your current one usually won’t be shy in telling you. Over time, the springs and cushions within a mattress can weaken. This reduces the level of support you have and can negatively affect the way you sleep. Loud creaking noises are also a sign that your weight isn’t evenly distributed, which results in further damage to the frame.
When your body isn’t supported properly throughout the night, it can result in a painful awakening come morning. Discomfort or stiffness in your shoulders, neck, and back become more common as the mattress continues to decay. With less cushion, your pressure points also become exposed to the hard, metal frame, which makes it more difficult for you to fall asleep in the first place. After tossing and turning all night, you may find you wake up feeling like you never even slept.
It might not be pleasant to think about, but your mattress is a collector of many different allergens. The longer you have a mattress, the more skin and dust particles it accumulates. For those who are sensitive to these allergens, sleeping in an old mattress can trigger your allergies and restrict your breathing. If you notice that you sneeze more frequently in bed or that you wake up with congested sinuses, it could mean you’re allergic to something in your bed.
Even if you don’t deal with morning aches and pains, simply tossing and turning at night can be a sign that your mattress is no longer comfortable. Our bodies continuously change—whether we lose weight or grow a few inches, our comfort needs change as our bodies do. Since an older mattress lacks the ability to bounce back to its original shape, it will remain formed to match your previous body type. This will create an uneven level of support and prevent you from getting the rest you need.
Even if you don’t experience any of these other signs, it’s important to acknowledge when your mattress is simply too old. It’s recommended that you replace your mattress every seven to ten years, as this is about the time when they begin to lose support.
